Why won't my Microphone work on my PC?

I have a super cardioid microphone, which i normally plug into an amp and use for performances. I bought a microphone to USB adaptor cable, http://www.djmmusic.com/itemdesc.asp?ic=KM3USB , and I have plugged my mic into the PC via a USB port. My PC recognises the microphone, but it doesn't seem to be picking up any sound from it.
I've tried to set up voice recognition, which fails because my PC seems to think my mic is muted or off (it is on, and has no mute button.) I also tried using Windows Sound Recorder, but no sound is being picked up.
What should I do?

I have read and am interested in EVP. I wanted to buy some kind of recording device at high quality but at low cost. Do you have any recommendations for a recording device for picking up ghosts?

How can you find out if somewhere in a room there is a microphone or something recording conversations?

My co-workers and I feel like our boss has something in the office recording our conversations when he is not around. We don't know how to find it and would like to know if there is a way you can detect it. We have looked around and can't find anything.

Should I delete tracking cookies that are found through Anti-Spy Scan?

When I run the Anti-Spy Scan, it reveals 77 websites that have a tracking cookie. I recognize about 5 of those websites. What bothers me are websites I use on a regular basis that when I key the first letter of my email address it fills in my User Name.and sometimes my password. I do NOT check the box Remember Me. These websites are not on the list of sites with a tracking cookie. I have asked this question in the past and was advised to look for spyware on my computer. I just downloaded IE 8 and it did a spyware scan and found no spyware.

How do I remove Spectorsoft from my computer or Spytech? ?

I have Windows Defender and Spybot, but they do not detect Spectorsoft or Spytech and I know for a fact that I am being monitored.
